In the midst of Covid-19 we’re all starting to batten down the hatches and spend some more time at home self-isolating. Whilst we can’t welcome family and friends into our homes you might start to notice some unwanted visitors taking refuge in your house, pests.
Why do I have more pests in my home lately?
Australia has been battling a myriad of weather related issues recently, we’re had bush fires one day, and flash floods the next, so what does this mean for pests?
The bushfires destroy ground foliage that bugs and pests use for protection; without coverage they can be easily seen and fall prey to birds and wildlife. Pests seek safety, a water supply, and food, everything you have at home.
Heavy rainfall can also send bugs and pests flocking to your door; as their ant mounds and nests become flooded, and pipes and drains that usually give cockroaches shelter become full of water, the pests seek a safe haven, and your home could provide the perfect escape.
Pests Control
Whilst the Australia, and the rest of the world are practising social distancing the pests in your home are quite happy to forage through your food supplies and set up camp.
Ants
After heavy rainfall you might notice and influx of ants in your Gold Coast/Brisbane home or commercial premises, but why is it a problem?
Ants travel in packs, with hundreds, thousands, and even millions living in a colony. Ants are tiny carries of bacteria and disease and since they don’t differentiate between your toilet and your kitchen counter they can carry their bacteria all around your home.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches have the ick factor, and worst of all they fly; but there is a good reason we don’t want to co-habitat with them, they can bring harmless and serious diseases into our home such as typhoid, salmonella, dysentery and diarrhoea to name a few.
Rats and mice
Rats and mice are seasoned in getting into the smallest cracks and crevices in your home; once they’ve found a supply of food and water they will settle in and begin to breed and before you know it a few mice become a family, and before you know it you will have a community of disease carrying rodents living with you.
Mice and rats can carry harmful and potentially fatal diseases with them and whilst they might hide in the walls, roof, in kitchen cupboards you might find a trail of their urine and faeces as they help themselves to your food.
Termites are riff in Queensland, 1 in 3 homes will have or has had termites, and if you do not take the necessary steps to protect your home they can eat away at its very structure. Insurance is usually void for termite damage if you don’t have adequate termite baits and treatments in place. Termites breed quickly, and when they are hungry they will feast on your home’s structure, furniture, and any other cellulose containing materials, and yes, that includes your stash of toilet roll.
